Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April, 1972. Since she was the only child She was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she was accepted into Temple University. In between two job opportunities and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. She was hoping to become a high-school English teacher. After 3 years of working as an aide to the teacher and a student her goal of becoming a high school English teacher fell through. After starting her career singing at poetry events She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. She was first outed as an artiste at a Roots Show. Then, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained knowledge of the stage when she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She was contracted by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
